It’s hard to believe that 2025 is already just around the corner! Instead of looking back at the past year, we wanted to take a moment to look at what’s ahead. We’re already seeing signs of what some of the key office design trends will be in the new year. If you’re planning an office update in the near future, here are some trends you might want to keep in mind.
Technology Driven Spaces
Heading into 2025, adapting to the needs of hybrid work is a big priority for many companies, particularly when it comes to technology. Before the pandemic hit, companies often didn’t have many spaces designed with things like video conferencing in mind. But now that video conferencing remains a big part of the workday for many of us, companies are interested in adding new meeting rooms specifically designed for this purpose, with features like integrated video monitors, good lighting, acoustic controls, and branded backdrops.
Technology can help support hybrid work beyond video conferencing. For example, smart sensors can be used to control lighting and heating systems based on how the office is being used at a given time. Or, if a company is moving away from assigned workstations, electronic reservation systems can make it easy for people to see which spaces are available and reserve the spaces they want to work in.
Flexible Spaces
Flexible office spaces have been trending for a long time, but the growth of hybrid work has made them more important than ever before. Before the pandemic, companies valued flexible spaces because they wanted the ability to change their space up as needed to accommodate growth. But for companies that have gone hybrid, the things people need from their workplace can change from day-to-day and it’s important to have environments that can easily adapt to evolving needs.
The idea of having a flexible office has also grown beyond simply having spaces that are easy to reconfigure. It can also mean having unassigned workstations and providing different types of spaces to work in so that people can choose where they work based on what best suits their tasks for the day.
Supporting Wellness
The past few years have been a reminder of how important it is for people to take good care of themselves, both physically and mentally. Work is a very significant part of our lives and companies are making an effort to help their employees lead healthier lifestyles in the office. The idea of supporting wellness at work can take many different forms. Providing ergonomic furniture and maximizing natural lighting are two common options, but many companies are going even further by adding fitness centers and relaxation rooms that employees can use. Or, if a fitness center isn’t a good option for your company, another idea is to design office spaces in a way that naturally encourages people to move around during the day.
Biophilic Design
Biophilic design is another trend that’s been around for a while, but is still going strong. This trend ties in perfectly with the wellness trend. Biophilic design is a concept centered around the idea that spaces that remind people of nature can be good for physical and mental wellbeing, as well as productivity and creative thinking. Offices that embrace biophilic design often have features like lots of natural lighting, plant walls, calming natural colors like blue and green, and are decorated with natural materials like stone and wood.
Sustainability
Sustainability is definitely a big priority for many companies. The idea of creating a workplace that’s more environmentally friendly is another trend that can take many different forms. For example, if a company has an office that’s too large for what they realistically need, they might be interested in downsizing to a smaller space that won’t require as much energy to power and heat. On the other hand, other companies might want to consider things like going paperless or using smart technology to control lights and heating systems. Or, if a company is planning an office renovation, they might specifically seek out eco-friendly materials to use in their new space.
